Venice Family Clinic Health + Justice Series: The Trauma of Incarceration
In 2020, the Clinic celebrates its 50th anniversary amidst the backdrop of complex and converging events: a global pandemic, a call to action on racial equity, and a fight to ensure that everyone has access to quality health care, regardless of their income, insurance or immigration status.
In light of this challenging reality, we are hosting a series of conversations about the relationship between health and justice.
For years, Susan Burton cycled between the trauma of abuse, addiction and incarceration. She eventually received behavioral health support at Venice Family Clinic, and went on to found A New Way of Life, a nonprofit that helps other formerly incarcerated women rebuild their lives.
Gayle King will moderate a discussion with Susan and Venice Family Clinic’s CEO, Elizabeth Benson Forer about the inextricable link between trauma and health and how as a society we can pursue solutions outside of the criminal justice system.
