SUMMARY:L.A. Louver Exhibitions: A Theory of Smoke by Michael C. McMillen\, Verdure by Yvette Gellis\, & No Mask is Wholly a Mask by Various Artists
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery in September for solo exhibitions by Michael C. McMillen and Yvette Gellis. From 14 September\, gallery hours will be 10am - 6pm Tuesday - Saturday by appointment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nL.A. Louver is pleased to present Michael C. McMillen: A Theory of Smoke.\n\n\n\nThis three-part exhibition is presented in discrete locations throughout the gallery. On the first floor\, one encounters Observatory (2021)\, a film installation\, and Cinema Futura (1990-2021)\, a time-based multimedia wall installation. Upstairs\, a final gallery brings together a selection of sculptural constructions created over the last three decades with shared thematic reference to architecture.\n\n\n\nWhen asked about the meaning of smoke as a theory\, McMillen states\, "It obscures and mystifies\, it portends disaster and lingers after the damage is done."\n\n\n\nMore information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nL.A. Louver is pleased to present Yvette Gellis: Verdure\, a group of dynamic new paintings created over the last year and hung in the gallery's light-filled second floor space. This is Gellis' first exhibition with L.A. Louver\, the latest in the gallery's series of Rogue Wave Projects celebrating emerging and underrepresented artists.\n\n\n\nThe experience of a year and more of global pandemic led Gellis to consider the interconnectedness of all people\, and of all life: "people\, plants\, animals\, the water and the air - all of it is connected in nature." Drawing from this wellspring of sympathy and love for the ailing planet\, Gellis infuses these paintings with tenderness through rich detail and deft paint handling. The figures become universal\, alluding to a collective sense of being.\n\n\n\nMore information\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Mask is Wholly a Mask\n\nSeptember 14 - October 16\n\n\n\nWorks made pre-pandemic by 20 different artists examine the idea of the mask\, both literally and figuratively.\n\n\n\nMore information
