Beyond Baroque - Xicancuicatl: A Retrospective Reading in Honor of Alfred Arteaga
Join us for an online reading celebrating the life and legacy of Chicano avant-garde poet, essayist, and cultural activist, Alfred Arteaga (1950 - 2008). This reading and discussion brings together scholars, authors, and translators to further explore the legacy of Arteaga's poetry and political-cultural criticism as it centered on border-crossing, language-mixing, and cultural mestizaje. In 2020, Wesleyan Press published the first gathering of Arteaga's poetry and prose, Xicancuicatl: Collected Poems, edited by David Lloyd with a preface by Cherríe Moraga. The reading will also be joined by Chicanx scholars and authors: Juan Felipe Herrera, Harry Gamboa Jr., Richard T. Rodríguez; and Arteaga's Japanese translator Ryuta Imafuku. A Q&A from audience members will follow after the readings.
The event will take place via zoom, hosted by David Lloyd.
