Venice Planning Team Public Meeting on Venice Coastal Zone Area
A resurvey of historic resources in the Venice Coastal Zone Area is being conducted as part of the Venice Community Plan Update effort. The Los Angeles City Planning’s (City) survey team is seeking your input.
The Venice Planning Team, in coordination with its consultant ICF and the City of Los Angeles’ Office of Historic Resources (OHR), is hosting a series of public meetings with the Venice community about historic places located within the Venice Coastal Zone Area. The first of these public meetings is on Monday, November 16th, 2020.
The purpose of this first meeting is to hear from the community about historic resources in their neighborhoods as we start the process to update the 2015 Venice SurveyLA results. The City’s team will also be available to answer questions about methodology, definitions, and what historic status means for property owners. We look forward to your input and hope you can join us!
What is SurveyLA?
In 2005, the City of Los Angeles with support from the J. Paul Getty Trust started its citywide historic resources survey. This is a process of systematically identifying and recording information on properties and neighborhoods that reflect important themes in Los Angeles’ growth and development. Historic resources include buildings, structures, objects, cultural landscapes, natural features, and historic districts.
SurveyLA is managed by the staff of the Office of Historic Resources (OHR) within Los Angeles City Planning. SurveyLA is conducted from the public-right-of-way and only properties that appear to meet criteria for listing are recorded. They are not designated resources; designation is a separate process which includes property-owner notification and public hearings. SurveyLA’s key goal is to integrate historic preservation more fully into the City’s planning processes and land use policies.
What are we doing?
We are hosting the first in a series of public meetings to provide the community an opportunity to share feedback and suggestions about historic places, people, and events located specifically in the Venice Coastal Zone.
When is this meeting?
November 16th, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. (virtually)
What is the meeting format?
The virtual Zoom meeting will consist of brief presentations from the Venice Planning Team, the Office of Historic Resources, and the City’s consultant ICF . Following the presentations, community members are invited to share their knowledge on potential historic properties, buildings, or other resources, as well as any comments on the previous survey results. Members of the public will likely be limited to 3 or 4 minutes of speaking time each.
Why are we doing this?
We want to ensure that SurveyLA results for the Venice Coastal Zone comprehensively capture the area’s diverse and multilayered history. This may include historic architecture, places associated with important historic individuals, and places where important historic events took place. We want your help identifying these places, people, and events as we update the previous SurveyLA results. These results will also inform potential policies and/or zoning in the updated Venice Community Plan.
Who Should Attend?
Anyone interested in Venice history and its preservation as well as anyone who may have questions about the survey methodology or previous results. If you are unable to attend but would still like to receive information about the survey update, or have suggestions about historic places, please still RSVP to receive details on how.
