Charles Garabedian "Sacrifice for the Fleet" and Tom Wudl "Beginningless Inexhaustible Empty" @ L.A. Louver
L.A. Louver is pleased to present Sacrifice for the Fleet, an exhibition of new works by 91-year-old, Los Angeles-based artist Charles Garabedian. Titled Sacrifice for the Fleet, the show features 19 large scale acrylic and oil paintings and charcoal drawings produced by Garabedian over the past two years. Garabedian returns to his favorite Greek plays and texts to conjure the imagery in his new body of work. Literary characters by Homer, Sophocles and Euripides, as well as Biblical references, are central depictions -- vitalized by the artist’s unabashed use of color and imaginative brilliance.
On our second floor gallery, L.A. Louver is pleased to present Beginningless Inexhaustible Empty, an exhibition of recent works by Los Angeles-based artist Tom Wudl. Over the past decade, Wudl has taken inspiration from revered Buddhist teaching, the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Ornament Scripture), to create an ongoing series of painstakingly detailed paintings, drawings and prints in response to the evocative and profound literary descriptions within the texts. Among the 12 works in the exhibition is a 60 x 72 in. (152.4 x 182.9 cm) painting titled Radiance of Sublime Reality Filling the Cosmos without End -- the largest work the artist has produced on this subject to date. Although larger in scale, the painting is imbued the same intensity of detail and complexity that are inherent in all of the works on view.
