About Venice Beach Suites & Hotel
Venice Beach Suites & Hotel was built in 1912 by J.D. Armstrong in a five-month process that used 290,000 bricks, originating as “The Potter Hotel”. The location was the key to the property’s initial success, as it was built across from community founder Abbot Kinney’s “Plunge”, a central point in his visionary “Venice of America”.
Over the years, the hotel endured many economic and cultural cycles (good and bad) along with Venice; surviving the Great Depression, fostering the Beat Generation and bearing witness to the birth of skateboarding, all the while doing its part in attracting visitors to this vibrant beach community. Having forty feet of frontage on the world-famous Ocean Front Walk has helped sustain over a century of vitality and longevity that was recently honored by the Venice Historical Society.
Andy & Rose Marie Layman, along with their son-in-law Matt Moore, have spent the last 20 years renovating the property, taking care to retain its character while introducing the modern amenities that today’s travelers demand. They finished restoring the historic façade and added two common-area walk-out balconies in March of 2015 and debuted their crowning achievement, a new roof-top deck, in July of 2015. Their guests have been loving the enhancements.
The experience is, as a cherished guest once said, “Where the past and the future collide in the now.”
