Venice Art Crawl on the Venice Canals
Venice Art Crawl Returns to the Venice Canals August 20 With Art, Music, Poetry and Live Painting
VENICE, Calif. — The Venice Art Crawl returns to the historic Venice Canals on Thursday, August 20, from 6 to 10 p.m., transforming one of Venice’s most beloved neighborhoods into an evening of art, music, poetry, live painting and community.
Now returning to the canals for what organizers believe is the fourth year, the Venice Art Crawl will feature pop-up art exhibitions at homes throughout the neighborhood, with residents opening their spaces to painters, photographers, potters and artists working in a wide range of mediums.
Throughout the evening, two pedestrian bridges along Grand Canal will become intimate performance spaces for 5 minutes, with entertainment taking place on the hour at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Visitors can expect singers, musicians, poets, live painters and other spontaneous performances as they make their way through the canals.
This year’s Art Crawl will also include a community drum circle with Sandra Sandia on a Grand Canal bridge, and poet James Beach calling neighbors together for the start of the crawl.
One of the highlights of the evening will be live painting by acclaimed Venice street artist Jules Muck and renowned automotive fine artist Harold Cleworth, along with live painting and exhibitions by many other participating artists.
“The Venice Canals are such a magical place to experience art because you’re walking through a real neighborhood and discovering something different around every corner,” said Sunny Bak of the Venice Art Crawl. “I’m looking forward to seeing the residents, the artists and the community come together again. I hope everyone comes out and discovers an artist they love and buys some art. Supporting artists is a big part of what the Venice Art Crawl is all about.”
Rather than taking place inside a traditional gallery, the Venice Art Crawl encourages visitors to wander. A patio may become a gallery for the night, a bridge may become a stage, and the next turn along a canal may reveal a painter at work, a poet reading or a musician performing.
The evening will showcase artists from Venice and throughout the Los Angeles area, including painters, photographers, ceramicists and potters, mixed-media artists and other visual artists, creating an eclectic celebration of the creative community that has long been part of Venice.
The Venice Art Crawl is designed to connect artists directly with the public while encouraging visitors to explore the neighborhood, meet the people making the work and, whenever possible, purchase art directly from participating artists.
